Stuttering Toolbox

  • Model easy, relaxed, SLOW speech

  • Reduce the number of questions you ask your child by simply commenting on what they have said.  Children speak more freely when they are expressing their own ideas rather than answering an adult's questions.

  • Give your child time to talk
    •  Try not to interrupt your child
    • Don't finish what he/she is saying
    • Increase the time between the end of your child's utterance and the start of your response

  • Let your child lead communication
    • Comment more than ask questions
    • Modifying your questions ("I wonder...", "I think...", "It looks like...") gives your child "thinking time" and longer to respond without time pressure.

  • Talk to your child about stuttering
    • Talking to your child about stuttering will not make it worse. We want to prevent the development of negative attitudes about stuttering.

  • Put a short period of uninterrupted time aside every day to play with your child, modeling easy, relaxed and slow speech (i.e. reading a book, playing a game)
