Physical Therapists Attend Advanced Baby Course

In 2010, CTC physical therapists Mary Loomis DPT, and Adam Schlichte DPT, completed the NDT Certificate Course in the Management and Treatment of Children with Cerebral Palsy and Other Neuromotor Disorders.  This course included over 250-hours of specialized training -specific to pediatric rehabilitation.

In January, Adam and Mary had the opportunity to expand on this foundation by attending an Advanced Baby Course in San Antonio, TX.  This course provided two weeks of focused training related to assessment and intervention techniques for infants and toddlers with neuromotor impairments.  Emphasis was placed on:

·    Facilitating efficient movement patterns

·    Prevention of maladaptive movement patterns and secondary impairments

What is Neuro-Developmental Treatment?

·      Neuro-Developmental Treatment (NDT) is an advanced therapeutic approach that can be utilized by physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech- language pathologists.

·       NDT has been developed around the impairments and functional limitations of individuals with neuropathology including cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, and stroke.

·      NDT evaluates the function and interaction of different body systems as related to posture and movement.

·       NDT utilizes a problem solving approach to the assessment and treatment of individuals with neuropathology. An understanding of typical movement and how it changes across the life span provides a framework for treatment planning.

·       Therapeutic Handling allows the therapist to:

Feel the child's response to movement

Facilitate efficient postural control and movement patterns

Decrease or limit movements that are not effective for function

Who Can Benefit from Neuro-Developmental Treatment?

·      Infants, children, and adolescences with a diagnosis of cerebral palsy

·      Infants who were born pre-maturely or who present with a complex medical history.

·      Children with a genetic condition that impacts movement including Down Syndrome and myopathies.

·      Children with abnormal muscle tone, inefficient movement patterns, or delayed motor skills.

·      Individuals who have sustained a traumatic brain injury or stroke
