News from CTC-Midland Music Therapist, Hana

We have just finished our first round of group music classes with wonderful success!

Our fall session offerings included Jam Session, Storybook Soundtracks and Wiggle N Giggle. The video featured here is from Jam Session; three students and their caregivers created a bell choir. Each had to wait for their turn to play by watching for the director to point to them. They rang the bell only the number of times as directed and learned to mute the bell when not playing.

The groups being offered this winter include: Jam Session, Wiggle N Giggle, Singing for Speech, and the "Listen Up!" Attention Group. Below are additional class descriptions. Check the Front Desk in Midland or our Facebook page for opportunities to sign up!

Jam Session

This music group focuses on instrument exploration and group improvisation, as each member of the group gains exposure to playing various instruments. Teamwork, listening skills, attending, social skills, and creative expression are heavily emphasized as we work together to form our own band.

 “Wiggle N Giggle”

This music group focuses on sensory regulation and coordination through structured movement exercises while developing gross motor skills, endurance, and core strength. This group will experience movement through dance, musical instrument play, sensory regulation and relaxation techniques, and exercise.

 “Listen Up” Attention Group

This music group focuses on three functions of attention: sustained attention (sustaining participation on a task), selective attention (ignoring distractions), and alternating attention (receiving instructions from multiple leaders). Participants will play musical instruments, dance, and listen to a variety of music while increasing their ability to attend.

 Singing for Speech

Singing for speech is a 6-week program that will focus on the development of speech and language. This music group is for beginning talkers, and is open to CTC children with a referral from their speech therapist. This group will focus on oral motor control, articulation, and respiratory strength through wind instrument play, and the specific use of developmentally appropriate music materials and experiences to enhance speech and language development through singing, musical instrument play, and combining music, speech and movement.
