Let’s talk “The Sandbox” and Early Intervention!

The Sandbox
A developmental-based intensive half-day, 5 days a week, program for children
through the age of six years old, diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.

Why is early intervention so important?

For the same reason early detection and screening is important- “to ensure that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can access evidence-based interventions to provide the best opportunity for optimal development and outcomes.”(1)

Research continues to show that due to the nature and severity of these disorders, it is integral to begin intensive intervention for both children and their families as early as possible.

In an article from the American Academy of Pediatrics, they discuss why early intervention  is critical-

Some authors have argued that the second year of life is a particularly critical developmental period for children with ASD for various reasons. First, the second year is a dynamic period of brain growth, during which increases in brain volume and atypical connectivity associated with ASD first emerge but also a time of substantial neural plasticity providing greater potential to alter developmental course. Second, a proportion of children with ASD reportedly regress in the second year.

Through purposeful play, The Sandbox creates an opportunity for your child to work with multiple professionals coming together to help provide your child the developmental skills and abilities to become integrated into their school and community along-side their peers, as independent social partners.

Using one-on-one direct instruction and small group environments, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Speech-Language, Occupational, Physical and Music therapies all come together to create a well rounded approach to this intensive intervention.
